[CONTEST] The First Holy Coffee Cup War - Results

Usually in contest result pages, we tend to see the writer talking about how hard it was to choose from such a great number of great entries.

We are no different! With such an influx of goodness coming in, we almost felt bad for only having 3 top places. The amount of enthusiasm for coffee in the dA community was severely underestimated.

Actually we did feel bad in the end, and added 5 Honourable Mentions along with the Top Three. Thus, there will be five additional entrants who stand to gain 20 points each.

If we had the funding, we'd make a lot more mentions because that's honestly how many good entries we felt there were in this contest.


Without further ado, the results:

Taking the already powerful scene from Fate/Zero and turning it into something so well tuned to the theme of coffee is what gives this piece its splendor. The idea itself is well executed, with the apparent scenario being "drinking coffee while discussing their favorite types of animals" - quite the innovative and cute spin on the original setting.

The characters are also excellently portrayed, with their personalities given due respect, and the artist goes so far as to also provide an entire dialogue session in the description to further solidify on this aspect. The art itself is clean and pleasing to the eye, and one cannot ignore those adorable animal plushies. The choice of coffee cups also provides for much amusement, and are amazingly fitting to both the mood of the piece and the characters involved. All in all, definitely a piece which shows much love for both coffee and the series involved. Well done Athyra! (We at the cafe prefer the lion!)

This takes a lot of coffee to even come up with. The first thing to note is how the artist strays from everyone else and goes for a comic format rather than a single panel. This works well, and as if that was not enough, it was decided that an epic take on coffee was to be done. Turning Cthulu into a giant cup of tea is just so... random, yet it's an idea which yells for more. And more it does, with the other characters featured with their own fittingly customized cups (though we at the cafe think that Iskander's "king sized" cup could've been much larger ).

The amount of passion shown towards coffee in this piece is what gives it life, with Saber going as far as creating a plot-turning point to declare her love for it. The technical aspects of the artwork is also admirable, it being done with markers and watercolour (yes, not digital means), and the results are colourful and charming - all which compliments the craziness on the paper. An excellent surprise amongst the entries of the contest, and well deserving of its place. We're also wondering what happened to that Kobayashi pilot now that he's been ingested by a giant cup of tea.

Kiritsugu: the hero that Fuyuki city deserves. This piece is unlike the top two, and focuses more on the traditional take on coffee while still keeping it powerful. It just comes to show that one does not always need to be zany and overbursting with satire to pull off something successful. The mood is well established, and is what gives the piece its form. It is loyal to the description and the character himself - though we do sort of question his access to online gaming.

The amount of detail in the art is gorgeous. Even without the full sized resolution, one can easily see that a lot of work has been put into making all those elements. With the full sized resolution, you find out things about Kiritsugu that you never expected. A setting which is busy yet neat, and shows someone who is clearly doing his job seriously. We know - he's drinking his coffee. After all, it helps.

Honourable Mentions

These are 5 entries which did not make it to the top three but were just so close to doing so. As a result, we have decided to not let these excellent efforts lay to waste. Each of these contestants shall be receiving 20 points .

The amount of coffee and romance flowing in this piece invades your eyes the moment you gaze upon it. It can be easily seen a lot of love and effort has been put into this piece, with the all the details and charming portrayals of the characters. Even Caster's minion is having a good swig of that brew and loving it! Cheers!

fateZero: Coffee break by


All the characters in this piece have been given their own amusing trait to show off in the name of coffee. The calm and clean look is contrasted by the little amount of chaos happening atop that log - war indeed. What really makes this piece work is the charm it gives off. A very cute and chibi-fied version of the dark world that is Fate/Zero's.

Fate/Extra: Holy Coffee Cup War by


A war surrounding a single cup of coffee. There is a lot to be said about this piece, considering how much is happening in it - one of them is how Fate/Extra's Rider really needs to get more fanart. On a more related note, it must certainly be congratulated on how much fun this scene is, and even the provided dialogue shows proper attention and effort was given to this entry. A definite solid entry in terms of concept and execution.

When coffee brings family-like moments like these, you certainly need to appreciate such warm feelings that result from it. Contrary to its title, this piece reminds us of the softer side of the war, and does its job excellently as such. The attention to the background is something that must not be missed, and shows that Shirou really takes care of the kitchen well. An excellent job!

The only piece in the entire contest to show a very wide spectrum of Type-Moon's female protagonists. Not that it was a requirement, but it was certainly welcome! A very well drawn piece indeed, and worthy of a mention. We must comment on how the ladies look like they're all flying through the air at a high speed though. Including Saber. Regardless, definitely one of the most aesthetically pleasing entries.
